A year ago last Saturday I was unexpectedly laid off from a job I thought I would retire from. I wanted to do a post that day but I’ve been so busy with clients, and commissions that I didn’t even noticed it had happened until I was reminded today.
I had never been let go from a job before, and had always thought that lay offs came with warnings. I was reeling as my husband had just been let go from his own job a few weeks before. My husband was on his way out of town and I remember calling him on the phone sobbing in the parking lot of the office, after saying good bye to my co-workers and cleaning out my desk. I had no idea what we would do. Our wedding had only been two months before, and we’d just spent the entirety of our savings on wedding and honeymoon expenses. We still had a mortgage, and all of our bills to pay, not to mention the holidays were coming up.
To make ends meet we started Freelancing, both of us had been in our professions for almost a decade, we had so much experience and we couldn’t see a reason why we couldn’t try our hand at freelancing while we looked for new work. However we were shocked when we realized there weren’t jobs to be had. We even tried looking for entry level positions in our field and no one seemed to hiring.
Even though we were stressed we WERE making ends meet by freelancing, we were able to have a great Christmas holiday, and pay our bills. It felt like a miracle, it felt like a sign!
With this in mind we struck out on to our own, we decided to go into business for ourselves!
It’s been one year since we’ve been on our own full time. One year since we were 100% our own bosses. It’s been one of the hardest years of my life, but it’s also been the most enjoyable. I don’t resent being laid off, it catapulted me into creating my dream job. My husband and I couldn’t be happier, and we honestly feel like we’re on the path to success.
So thank you to all of our clients, friends, and family who have believed in us. We wouldn’t be here with out you.
Here’s to an amazing year, and here is to many, many more to come!
